Our History

The Picture Rocks Fire District was established July 1, 1977 under the laws of the State of Arizona to provide fire protection and life safety services for the area within the Fire District boundaries.  The District was formed as a direct result of the tragic deaths of two children on March 1, 1977 that occurred in a structure fire less than two blocks from where Picture Rocks Fire Station 120 is now located.

In approximately 1980 we instituted 24 hour dispatching service. In 1984 we moved into Station 120.  At about this same time, Station 2 was also constructed.  Station 2 property was sold in June 2000.

In 1985 the District established advanced life support ambulance service in accordance with regulations set forth by the Arizona Department of Health Services and the laws of the State of Arizona.

In 1986 Advanced Cardiac Life Support was instituted to meet the needs of the District.

In 1988 we instituted 24 hour full time personnel to answer emergencies.  This consisted of two personnel for each 24 hour shift.  In 1994 we went to staffing of four personnel per shift.  In 2001 we went to staffing of five personnel per shift. The Picture Rocks Fire District serves a population estimated to be over 9,000.  The area of the District is approximately 33 square miles.  The District also services the Saguaro National Park via an Intergovernmental Agreement.
